Thanks a lot, Rogers…

Geek Speak

Greedy bastards.

So, here in Canada, we’ve been itching to get out hands on the iPhone since it was released in the States. Some even went so far as to get one anyway and have it hacked to work upon the Rogers network. On June 9th, Apple announced that the iPhone would officially be coming up to Canada (and the rest of the world). Needless to say, this will be the hot item of the summer around the world, if not the entire year. It was no surprise that Rogers would be the carrier in Canada; they’re the only one up here who has the infrastructure. This roughly translates to them having a monopoly, which again roughly translates to them being able to charge whatever the fuck they want.

Many thought that this would be the turning point for Rogers… that Apple would pressure them into FINALLY having an unlimited data package for a decent price. For a time, it looked like this might be a possibility. Rogers caving to demand for fair prices. Ha.

Guess what? Rogers said “bollocks” to that (yes, they used that word), and released the following:

400MB per month at the lowest rate? It’s not like I’d be surfing a lot on the thing, but I don’t want to have to worry about paying extra should I go over, especially at $0.50/MB. That shit adds up. I also have the “$20 Value Pack” already with my Nokia 5300, as I like being able to send txt msgs without a cap, and the early evening calling is nice (usually their unlimited evenings and weekends starts at 9pm?! WTF?!), so I would need that too with the iPhone. Right there: $80/month. Then, their system access fees, and taxes, blah blah blah… I’ll be paying close to $100 per month for the damn thing.

But you know what? As much as I bitch and whine about the prices, I’m going to be paying them, as I want the iPhone… and Rogers knows this. Sure, they throw in unlimited Hotspot access, which is cool of them, but how often will I hang out at a Second Cup? Almost never.

It’s so fucking irritating that Rogers gets away with this. Looking at the rates down in the States, this hardly seems fair. Rogers makes hand-over-fist in cash, and they still feel the need to squeeze even more pennies out of the average customer. Sure, it’s all about business, but this goes beyond that. This is just simple greed.

All said and done, though, I can’t wait to get the iPhone. :-D

Update (July 3rd, 2008): To hell with Rogers. I’m not going to get roped into a three-year contract where I essentially agree to pay ridiculous prices just to enjoy an innovative device. I’m going to sit back and wait for the competition to get their act in gear and offer the iPhone on their network. Rumour has it that Telus is working on this for early 2009, and I’ll be taking my number over to them if they’re successful.

I’ll split the $100 with you if I can have the phone on the weekends…and if you answer all incoming calls from my mom.

You can go to ruinediphone.com to sign a petition regarding these crappy rates.

Thanks for the link. I added my two cents, and even submitted the URL to Slashdot. We’ll see if it gets posted.

Oh, and if I get an iPhone, it’s MY iPhone! I don’t like to share! :-D

Man I thought Rogers was an asshole as soon as he changed the name of the Sky Dome. It was named for the fans and by a fan. Then this greedy pric comes a long and changes the name, simply because he can. What an ASSHOLE! Then he buys CityTV and he is moving them from the building where they have been for at least two decades. The speakers corner and Much Music have been apart of the clubing experience for years. Now he’s moving them over by Ryerson. How stupid is that!?
He’s greedy with the cable prices and his regular cell phones. That is why as long as the Iphone is only available through Rogers I will never have one. I will stick with Bell just because I don’t want to give Rogers any more of my money. If I could have a sattelite dish at my townhouse I wouldn’t even have cable through Rogers. Rogers is my only option for tv. But when I have the option I will not use Rogers services. He is down right greedy and I won’t make him any richer than he already is if I can help it!

As much as I would like to see TELUS switch to GSM. It’s not going to happen.. at least for 3G. TELUS has released a few cdma/gsm products(see below) but as for the network. They are not going to waste money on 3G, by the time they finish moving it would be obsolete. However as an employee myself (yeah, yeah…) I have heard that they are planning on moving to the next 4G implementation of GSM. As for the current iPhone.. I dunno really want one, but may stick with my touch..

    Graeme:
I’ve bitched about the SkyDome name change before. To me, it will ALWAYS be the SkyDome. But, I had no idea that Ted Rogers was moving City-TV. What an asshole! I seriously don’t like this guy, and I’m only judging him from his actions. Its really too bad that Rogers has the best internet speed in Toronto right now, otherwise I’d cut everything away from them.

    Jon:
Well, I guess that’s that then. Thanks for dashing my hopes of Telus obtaining the iPhone sometime soon. I really want the iPhone, but I don’t want to pay the ridiculous prices Rogers thinks that it can get away with. What the hell is up with our government? Why aren’t they stepping in? This is highway robbery.

I agree. They are crazy. However for myself I’m always near a hotspot (haha look at me trying to justify buying one. I can justify anything really), but in one of my many emails to Rogers, they recently replied with this (see below). Which doesn’t really say they are planning on changing them soon, but I do like stuff. But I’ve seen a few emails back from Rogers saying that you are not limited to the iPhone plans, and you can add stuff like Call Display a la carte for $7.
I think the only way they will lower prices anytime soon is if people don’t buy them, but inevitably people will.
