I’d like to think that I don’t have many things that annoy me. I’m generally a very laid-back easy-going guy, but I have been known to be vocal about things that get on my nerves. A relatively minor, yet fairly significant, pet peeve of mine are people I refer to as “yeah-yeahs” and “huh-huhs”.
You know the types: the ones that when you’re having a conversation with them, they’re making so much noise aknowledging what you’re saying that you sometimes wonder if they heard what you actually just said, especially considering the fact that they’re usually louder than you are.
For example, there is one girl who waits for the same bus as I do to head home at the end of the day (in fact, I just saw her this evening, which is what prompted this post), and if I see her waiting there, I’ll either opt to wait for the next bus, or take the streetcar. She is THAT annoying. She is a “huh-huh”. If she happens to have a conversation with anyone on the bus that she knows, and judging from previous rides she knows a lot of people, while they’re talking she is constantly laughing, but not a “haha” sort of laugh, rather, it is an annoying “huh-huh”. The entire bus is subjected to this loud seemingly-fake laughter, and perhaps I’m the only one who finds it irritating as hell, I don’t know. She isn’t the only person I’ve met that does this, so it’s not a one-off… which is unfortunate. Thankfully I almost always have my headphones with me, and I never go anywhere without my iPhone.
Then there are the “yeah-yeahs”, the ones who keep saying “yeah” after each sentance you speak, I guess with the intent of letting you know they’re following your every word, yet resulting in usually throwing you off and trying to remember what the hell you were talking about in the first place. I knew someone in Calgary that did this (no, it isn’t anyone I am still in contact with, Calgarian friends, so it isn’t any of you), and she was so annoying that I tried not to get roped into any conversations with her… or even hear ones I wasn’t involved with. Once in a while I hear a “yeah-yeah” on the TTC, and that’s when the headphones come on.
Anyway, there’s my long-overdue rant. It’s bothered me for ages, and yet I’ve never said anything about it… so why not post it?
Mmmmm hmmmmm.
yeah, yeah, yeah – huh huh
