Goodbye Father…

From the mind of Evan Roberts

Early this morning, I suffered one of the greatest losses imaginable. My Father passed away.

He was the most selfless and caring man I knew, and was always there for me. In times of trouble, he was there to bail me out. When I got a job in Calgary, he and I drove my stuff across Canada, and he drove back by himself. He even did the same thing when I moved back to Toronto and there wasn’t enough room in the van for me. I don’t know of many people who would do that.

He was knowledgable in all world matters, and seemed to have an opinion on everything, which made for some interesting conversations and debates. He was the one person I looked up to the most, and I knew that no matter what that I could count upon him.

The world seems empty without him. He was the one I would turn to in times of grief.

Rest in peace, Father. I will love you always, and forever miss you dearly.

    Evan,

My most sincere condolences to you and your family.

Sometimes that father-son relationship is tough. But being a father myself these days, I can appreciate my own father more. I know what a father will do for their child.

    Take care.

Evan, it is with sorrow that I have heard of your father’s passing. Growing up, you don’t really appreciate the often ‘hidden’ job your dad does in raising you in addition to being a provider, offering guidance and being a mentor. Both my parents have passed away now, with my father only recently (Sept 07). It’s only after some time and personal reflection do you feel somewhat more at peace with that situation and our own mortality. I can tell you were close to your father and offer any support I can in this difficult time for you.

“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.” ~Mark Twain

    Hi Evan
Although I did not know your dad, I have heard that he was a very selfless man. The stories of his generosity and giving nature will be inspirational to more people than you may know. My thoughts are with you, Molly and your entire family during this difficult time. As I have said to Molly, I am here to help with anything you or your family may need.

    Evan,
So sorry for your loss. If there is anything I can do to help please don’t hesitate to let me know. I’m sure you must have inherited your good nature from your father. He truly sounds like a selfless and caring man.

I want to comment; I notice the picture of your Dad looking at the camera while sitting in the Mandarin restaurant. Did he love that place as much as I do?

Hey Ev – just writing to let you know that Mike and I are thinking about you and Molly during this sad time. It is never easy, so lean on us as much as you can. To laugh, to cry, whatever you need we are here for you.

I’ll never forget the story you told me about your dad surprising you with a birthday cake outside of your appartment. He truly was a wonderful man, so caring and full of life. Our ultimate pictures will never be the same.

Seeyou Saturday and if you need anything at all let us know.

Six months have passed since you’ve left us, Dad.

Since that day, I’ve taken on more responsibilities than I thought possible, and I wish that you were here to give me some of the advice that I usually didn’t ask for in the first place, yet you offered anyway. Believe me, I wouldn’t turn it down now. The tasks before me are so daunting that I sometimes feel as if I am never going to get them done.

Still, if there is one thing that I inherited from you (thank goodness not your hair line – that will NEVER be my future no matter what you say!), it was your resolve and determination to see things through. The house was your one failing moment, but that was because you were busy doing all the things you were so passionate about. Getting the stories about the Canadian Military into the news, working as an Aide de Camp for the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, your involvement with the Toronto Scottish Regiment and the Cadets, your work at the RCMI, the list goes on and on, and yet you also somehow managed to take care of us as well. You were truly a magnificent man… this I always knew, but now sadly fully appreciate too late.

Time may pass, but the pain of your passing does not. I feel lost without you, yet I must try to somehow go on, and ensure that everything gets done properly and seen through to the end. You would settle for nothing less, and neither should I.

I miss you, Father. I love you, ‘addy.
