25 random things about me…

From the mind of Evan Roberts

Seems that EVERYONE on Facebook is doing this as of late, and rather than posting it on Facebook, I thought I’d see if I could make it up to 25 random things and post it here. It is my site afterall, and this is where this shit belongs.  :-)

So, here we go:

  1. I hate peanut butter. I find the slightest taste of peanut butter disgusting, which is odd, as I loved peanut butter and banana sandwiches when I was younger. With that in mind, I get the odd craving for peanut butter on toast perhaps once every year or two.
  2. I hate nuts of any kind. I hate the taste of peanuts (as explained earlier), but it’s the texture of the nuts breaking in my mouth as I chew that makes me want to gag. No idea why. I love sunflower seeds though. Go figure.
  3. I was in grade one twice. No, this is not because I am slow or anything, rather it was due to the fact that the Toronto Board of Education and North York Board of Education were separate entities when my family moved to Don Mills, and they didn’t have a process for transferring students. I had skipped senior kindergarten (I don’t recall why), and was in grade one at Orde Street Public School when we moved. As such, I had to wait for the new school year to begin, and started grade one at Norman Ingram Public School at my proper age level.
  4. My favourite colours are blue, green, and brown. All earth-tones.
  5. In 1989, I was hit by a car while crossing a crosswalk, and ended up with a broken left knee and a broken right elbow. The car was going over 60km/h, and I was carried on the hood for a bit and rolled off the back before it came to a screeching halt. It was not my fault. Still, I was in a wheelchair for a number of months, then crutches for a couple of weeks, and then walked with a cane for another couple of weeks. It was an eye-opener for me about how easily life can be taken away.
  6. Bright light makes me sneeze.
  7. I find it hilarious when people swear out of anger, especially at me. It takes considerable effort on my part not to laugh when someone is swearing at me.
  8. My first computer was a Commodore 128. When I was younger, my Father took me to see WarGames and when we walked out of the theatre I apparently said that I really wanted a computer. I’m sure he thought that I would end up as a programmer, but I mainly used it for playing games.
  9. My Father refused to allow my brother and I to have any type of video game system (Nintendo, Sega, etc) while we were growing up, as he claimed it was for the “brain dead”. So, we would always hang out at friends’ places that had those systems we wanted to play.
  10. I am brand-loyal. If I use a particular brand of whatever, and it turns out to be what I like, I don’t care about other brands. This includes food, restaurants, stores, etc.
  11. There are times that I think I should be smarter, or understand things a lot quicker, and wonder what my life would be like if I hadn’t been hit by a car.
  12. I am a die-hard Canadian. I love my country, love the people, love the cities, love the environment, and our friendly attitude. That being said, I find our politics boring, our global standing lacking, and at times would like to live some place warm all year round.
  13. I don’t have my driver’s license. This isn’t to say that I can’t drive, as I can, and have driven from Toronto to Calgary twice. I just never got around to it. Being hit by a car didn’t help either.
  14. I was in the Canadian Reserves for two years. I didn’t enjoy it that much, and I believe I got fucked over during my summer qualifying course. I should have left right then, but my Father was a Captain and pull some strings to allow me to stay. I don’t think I should have.
  15. I never went to university or college. Right out of high school I got a job at an ISP called Interlog, and worked there for two and a half years. To this day, I count my time at Interlog as the most rewarding experience I’ve had at a company, as it got me started on the path I am on right now, and I’m still in touch with a lot of the friends I made while working there. As well, every job I’ve had since Interlog has been due to a referral from someone I used to work with.
  16. Some people may think I have a problem with authority, but I don’t. I respect those with authority, but I don’t respect those who shouldn’t have authority, or otherwise abuse it, and I usually make this apparent.
  17. If I get started on a task that I find interesting, I’ll generally become absorbed in it and won’t care about anything else until I’m done, or am ready to pass out from exhaustion.
  18. I find the process of eating to be the biggest waste of time. This is why I’ll usually eat my meals while watching a movie or TV show or reading something on the ‘net.
  19. I have the most annoying habit of usually being able to see things from both sides. This comes into play during an argument, as I can usually see things from someone else’s point of view as well as my own. It also means that I can’t sell anyone anything, as I have been ask why someone should buy what I’m selling versus something someone else is selling and it’s a better product. I’m too honest. I’ve often said that I couldn’t sell a drowning man a life jacket.
  20. I cannot wrap my head around strategy games, role-playing games, or sports games. I enjoy first-person shooters (on PCs, not consoles), sci-fi games, puzzles, and I love platformer and sandbox games.
  21. I’ve been using the nick of “Dysantic” since the late 1990s. I was sitting at my desk, trying to think of a better nickname than “BIGgunMAN” (which I’d been using in online games for a bit), and while lost in thought I looked at a box of Dysan disks. That’s when “Dysan” + “tic” popped into my head, yet I initially only used it for games where I couldn’t have a nick longer than eight characters. Unfortunately, some dipshit on the ‘net has started using it as his nick, and even went so far as to claim HE created it. I’m all for believing in random chance, but I highly doubt he came up with it, and instead thought it was a good nick to use after coming across my use of it.
  22. There are times that I wish I was born 300 years from now, as I would love to live in a time when space travel was commonplace. I’ve always had a fascination with astronomy. That being said, there are times that I wish I was born 300 years ago, as I would love to live in a world without technology and hardly tainted by the “progress” of the human race.
  23. I find the Microsoft VS Apple stances amusing. While I am a fan of Apple, and prefer Mac OS X to Windows, I do realise that each have their place in the world. Windows is mainly used for business machines and PC gaming, while Mac OS X is mainly used by artists, new-age companies looking to be trendy, and the parents of those who are knowledgeable in computers that don’t want to have to deal with the headache of constantly having to clean a machine infected with every virus available. As Macs become more and more popular, they’ll suffer the same fate as Windows and have every virus writer looking for exploits… but we’re just not there yet.
  24. I enjoy being able to communicate with people via phone, instant messaging, text messaging, email, etc, but if I don’t feel like talking to someone at any given time, I feel no obligation to respond or pick up the phone.
  25. I am not a fan of “if everyone did this, the world would be a better place” logic. This applies to vegetarianism, limitations of buying things, etc. If I don’t buy something, I am ONE PERSON doing that. In an ideal world, if we ALL didn’t buy something, then it would have an effect, but I am a realist; I am but one drop in a lake. However, on the flip side, I can see how this logic is useful in other arguments. I recycle as I think it is a good thing, I turn off lights that do not need to be on, I don’t like to leave water running, I will attend rallies if I believe in the cause, and I will sign petitions. In that sense I am an activist; a waterfall starts with but one drop.

Wow… I hit 25, and I didn’t even have to work hard to do it!

I wonder how much of this is stuff that people didn’t know about me, because from my standpoint, it’s common knowledge.   ;-)

Recent body exercises…

I am a fat bastard

Recently, I’ve been concerned about my gut, and have been trying to incorporate more sit-ups into my usual workout routine. However, I’ve been feeling that it wasn’t enough, and decided to leaf through some of the old Men’s Health magazines I’ve got kicking around the apartment. That’s when I found the following three exercises, and while I’ve only been doing them for a little bit, they’re definitely helping out. They look simple, but I challenge you to do them first and then tell me they’re simple:

Side Bridge

Lie on your side with your forearm on the floor under your shoulder to prop you up, and your feet stacked. Contract your core and press your forearm against the floor to raise your hips until your body is straight from ankles to shoulders. Hold for 15 to 45 seconds, then repeat on the other side. Contract your abs and butt muscles forcefully to keep your body straight.

Plank with Diagonal Arm Lift

Assume a modified pushup position with your feet shoulder-width apart, forearms on the floor. Keeping your torso steady, raise your right arm for-ward and to the right, so that it points to 2 o’clock. Hold for 2 seconds, then lower and repeat with your left arm, raising it to 10 o’clock. That’s one rep. Your elbows should be bent 90 degrees and directly under your shoulders.

Single-Leg Lowering

Lie on your back with your legs extended straight up. Keeping your legs straight, lower your left leg until your foot is 2 to 3 inches off the floor. Return to the starting position, then repeat with your right leg; that’s one repetition. Think about pushing the bottom of your heel away from your hip as you lower your leg. Don’t point your toes; keep your foot flexed toward you. Lead with your heel.

Personally, I find the “Plank with Diagonal Arm Lift” exercise to be the most difficult and most rewarding. Doing 10 reps at this point is pretty much good for me, but it’ll increase as time goes on, I’m sure.

Check out the rest of the exercises on their site. The “Swiss-Ball Knee Tuck” uses a Swiss ball, but I can’t have one of those as the cats will slash it, and the “Cable Kneeling Chop” uses a machine, which I don’t have access to. I haven’t gotten around to adding the “Glute-Bridge March” yet, but we’ll see; as it is right now, I’m usually pretty tired after going through my routine, and don’t really have a desire to hurt myself… too much.  :-D
